Accordingly, visiting teams are punished with an average of around half a yellow card more per match than home teams. And in football-only arenas, the rate even increases to three-quarters of a yellow card per game. In stadiums with a running track (of which there were still a few during the study period), on the other hand, the rate is somewhat lower, presumably because the audience is further away from the referees due to the athletics facilities. Thus, in particular atmospheric soccer stadiums, more yellow warnings are issued against the away team.

It is even possible that a loud shout from the crowd after fouls has a greater influence on the game than all the cheering with which the fans otherwise support their club. However, whether these referee decisions actually result in a measurable scoring advantage for the home team as a result of the crowd’s noise is unclear.
